What Is GLP-1 Weight Loss?

Balancing Your Natural Hunger Signals

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide 1, which is a hormone your body naturally produces to manage blood sugar and hunger. This treatment uses a prescription version of that hormone to send signals to your brain and stomach. It works by slowing down how fast your stomach empties (keeping you full for longer) and helping your pancreas manage insulin more effectively. The overall purpose of this procedure is to give you a metabolic head-start so you can focus on building healthy habits without the constant distraction of intense hunger or cravings.

GLP-1 Recovery & Results

A Guided Path To Success

Recovery

There is no formal recovery time needed for GLP-1 injections, but there is an adjustment period. Some patients may experience mild nausea, indigestion, or changes in bowel habits as their body gets used to the medication. We recommend limiting alcohol, as it can irritate your stomach and impact your blood sugar while on a GLP-1. Since the medication slows down digestion, it may also affect how your body absorbs other oral medications, so we will review your current prescriptions during your consultation.

Results

Weight loss on a GLP-1 is a gradual and healthy process. You will slowly work your way up to a target dose, which is when most patients see the most significant change. While some feel a decrease in appetite almost immediately, the best results typically appear over several months when the medication is paired with a healthy diet and exercise. You can expect to see a more contoured version of yourself and enjoy the increased energy that comes with carrying less weight. Our team will be there to adjust your protocol if you experience side effects, ensuring you stay comfortable while reaching your goals.

GLP-1 Weight Loss Frequently Asked Questions

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is a hormone that causes huge effects on the regulation of blood sugar by stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion. Insulin is a hormone that promotes sugar uptake by the cells, stores sugar as glycogen, promotes the building of fat, and signals the body to build skeletal muscle. In addition, GLP-1 inhibits glucagon release (which slows down the release of sugar into the blood so that you burn more fat), slows down gastric emptying (makes you feel full), and lowers the desire for food intake (because you feel full).

GLP-1 agonists help to control your blood sugar, but people taking them also tend to lose weight. GLP-1, the key hormone involved, slows down how fast your stomach empties food (called gastric emptying). And in addition to causing your pancreas to release insulin, GLP-1 agonists also blocks a hormone that causes your liver to release sugar (glucagon). Together, these functions can help you feel less hungry, causing you to eat less food and lose more weight.

Yes, it is believed that GLP-1 agonists helps curb your appetite. In addition to slowing gastric emptying to make you feel full longer. GLP-1 also plays a direct role in how appetite is regulated.

You will slowly work your way up to the target dose at which time you will see the most amount of weight loss. It is important to keep in mind that weight loss can take time, and you will see the best results when you are using your medication in combination with a healthy diet and exercise. Sometimes the medication may not work for you, or you may not be able to tolerate the full dose due to side effects in which case your practitioner will provide additional options or change the protocol to better suit your individual needs.

The common side effects of GLP-1 are:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Indigestion
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation

DO NOT USE A GLP-1 IF:

  • You or any of your family have ever had Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2 (MEN 2)

BEFORE USING A GLP-1, TELL YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER MEDICAL CONDITIONS, INCLUDING IF YOU:

  • Have or have had problems with your pancreas or kidneys
  • Have a history of diabetic retinopathy
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or breastfeed.

Things to keep in mind when you are on a GLP-1:

Alcohol: Limit how much alcohol you're drinking. Alcohol can influence your blood sugar and there is a risk that it may drop too low in combination with a GLP-1, especially if you are a diabetic and or drinking on an empty stomach. Alcohol may irritate your stomach and worsen GI side effects when in combination with the medication.

Medications: Make sure your provider is aware of all medications you are taking before starting a GLP-1. GLP-1 agonists slow down gastric emptying which could potentially impact the amount of oral medication absorbed by the body.
